The sailor shirt has its origins in 19th-century naval uniforms. The distinctive square sailor collar extending across the back is said to have been designed as a practical detail to protect sailors’ uniforms from stains caused by pomade used in their hair at the time. Its straight lines and simple construction were created with both ease of production and freedom of movement in mind, making it a highly functional design suited for demanding work aboard ships. Inspired by this form born from function, Dhal has redesigned the sailor shirt using lightweight 4.5oz plain-weave chambray denim. The fabric has a light yet structured feel, creating a comfortable silhouette that gently rests on the body without clinging to its lines. As chambray allows air to circulate naturally, it remains cool and comfortable to wear. The sailor collar has been refined to create a clean look around the neckline, while the back features a slightly larger collar for a distinctive silhouette. By creating a subtle contrast between the front and back, the design avoids feeling overly sweet, resulting in a balance that feels natural and sophisticated for adults.
