COTTON LINEN CHAMBRAY Cotton 65% / Linen 35% This chambray fabric is produced in the Nishiwaki region of Japan, an area renowned for its expertise in yarn-dyed shirting fabrics. From weaving to finishing, the entire process is completed within the region. The weft yarn combines linen with TOP-dyed cotton yarn. TOP dyeing is a method in which fibers are dyed in multiple colors before being spun into yarn, creating a rich and dimensional color expression. The yarn is spun at a factory that operates the only remaining British-style spinning machines in Japan. Unlike modern high-speed spinning methods, these machines twist the fibers slowly while allowing air to remain within the yarn, creating a soft, voluminous texture with a natural warmth. After being captivated by this slow and thoughtful approach to craftsmanship, Dhal continues to explore this technique every season. The result is a fabric with a naturally irregular character, depth of color, and a distinctive texture that can only be achieved through time and care. For this version, the natural slub texture of linen is combined with the melange effect of TOP-dyed cotton, creating a layered surface reminiscent of colors found in nature. During the spinning process, subtle traces of pink, yellow, pale blue, and white fibers appear throughout the fabric, allowing you to discover small variations and nuances each time you look at it. The air held within the yarn structure created by the British-style spinning process also gives the fabric excellent breathability and a surprising lightness despite its appearance. In addition, some of the TOP-dyed yarns are colored using partially plant-derived dyes, adding to the fabric’s natural and gentle expression. With a crisp, dry touch that does not cling to the skin, combined with the firmness and resilience unique to linen, this fabric has a presence even when made as a single layer. Over time, it develops a beautiful patina, allowing you to enjoy its changing character with every wear.
